First-Time Drug Offenders - Federal Safety Valve

If you are a first-time drug offender, it is important that you work with an attorney who knows about the federal safety valve, which could reduce your sentence. If you have no prior criminal record, you may automatically get points taken off your sentencing. This option only applies to those pleading guilty.

For example, if you receive a federal sentence of one year, you will likely serve more time than someone who receives a federal sentence of one year plus one day. Unless your sentence is more than one year, you can't get any credit for good behavior. If your lawyer doesn't know about the federal safety valve, you may be required to serve more time.
